Intro sounds on Wail of Sumer

Discuss about the albums and videos the band has released over the years. The band we are talking about here is of course F.O.T.N. and not side-projects, similar bands etc. Please use other sections if you want to talk about the weather.

Intro sounds on Wail of Sumer

Post by valaqui » Tue Feb 01, 2011 8:33 pm

Does anyone know how they made these wicked atmospheric sounds that set the rest of the 14 minutes up so well? One sounds like a distorted guitar with resonance and amplitude modulation with the modulation rate changing. Then there's the high pitched sound that could also be a guitar but maybe a synth? I'm not a guitarist so not familiar with the various types of pedals, maybe this is an easy question for a guitarist who's familiar with all that gear. If so I'd love to know!

Jon Carin and his synthisiser, possibly. Maybe sampled sounds. There is a flute like sound in there as well.
Yours, aye!

Likewise. Brilliant Hawkwind instrumental as well. I bought the remastered album a year ago and it's really outstanding. :D

Thanks guys for the replies, I'd totally forgotten I asked the question here, and just found my own thread by searching google again [facepalm]
Certainly a similar sound on Hawkwind MrBonZai - good spot, I'll have to check them out.
Cheers GreboGoth, I'm happy to have just heard TImeflows for the first time thanks to your suggestion, not sure how to approach Andy though!

I do know that the keyboard used by the band for the later tours and possibly for the album used to belong to Hawkwind...maybe there is something in that?
Insert unfunny witicism here!

Although there is keyboard involved, I believe the effect is mainly guitar feedback (with a little whammy), and tremolo with continuous modulation. For those who don't know the tremolo (as an effect, not the misnamed "trem" whammy bar), it is awesome, and you can also hear it as the pulsing background triplets which tie WOS+ATWYHBA together.
