Zoon - Ten Years on

Post by Coma » Wed Sep 06, 2006 1:08 am

Not a lot of talk on Zoon so how do we feel about it ten years after it was released?

For me it is by far the best thing Carl has ever done. The depth of this album is still amazing. At the time I had heard nothing like it before and remember being stunned after the first listen. It feels to me like a complete realisation of a concept that starts and ends at the same point and brings sound, lyric and artwork together perfectly.

... but no album divided the community like Zoon.

I can't really claim it's a creative high point, since I feel that was 'Elizium'. But I got the concept (even if I wasn't aware of the myth behind it) and where other Neph fans in my circle were totally turned off by the album's metal sound, I dug it, even though it did take some getting used to (a couple of hours  ). There's enough atmosphere there to make it one enjoyable ride. Just like Elizium, it was obvious to me this album was created as a whole; you could not just listen to one song and not want to hear the others. Still, I do have a favorite song on 'Zoon', being 'Melt'. As for the album : I liked it then, I still like it now.

No "Loved it then, hate it now?"
Just kidding.
I don't know if I ever loved the album, but it's good though.

10 years on, Zoon is still the dog's bollox IMHO. It certainly has depth - all those different samples buried in the mix (buzzing flies etc.) Even now I still find something new eveytime I play it.
My favourite track is 'Shine', although that could change tomorrow.

*notworthy* and an extra *notworthy* for good measure...

Pretty much my sentiments, but "Penetration" for me (If you get what I mean  ).

Has anyone else noticed all the "...Had passed away" etc. vocals hidden on the Fallen CD..?

I'm sure Carl said in an interview around the time of the split he wanted to make the music darker, and by jove he did it :D

creative may not be the most accurate word to define Zoon - but compared to any other "goth metal" stuff, it's a wonderful work imho.

Hate it.Even gave it another listen a few weeks ago.Got to track 2.Aweful sub-slayer thrash metal bollocks.
It also sounds like "Cradle of filth".I expect that little twat singer of CoF has a treasured copy somewhere being as they've based their career on "Zoon".
If its thrash you want,I suggest "Anal cnut".At least they like a laugh!

creative high point.
Ten years old but way ahead of it's time I reckon.
It's been a very underrated album, for me it's intense and has a great tight sound.

Has a couple of good tunes but only Shine really does it for me. Zoon does not compare to the earlier stuff IMO; The Nephilim and Elizium are very unique albums and surprisingly "fresh" even today.

My fave is Shine, too.
But im not comparing Zoon with Fields work,uh? I dont think you should compare them cuz they're 2 completely diferent things.

Zoon could have been great if all the death metal guitars were left out

the artwork always reminded of iron maiden stuff which in my mind
isn t a good thing

shine is good though

it would have been something else. what kind, I don't know... but surely not as dark and violent as it needed to be in time.

Well, in as much as McCoy is the primus motor in both I think it is OK to compare. But at the end of the day it makes very litte difference whether Zoon is a mediocre FOTN album or just a mediocre album.
