Ahráyeph

Here within you discuss about the side-projects, i.e. the bands that has something to do with F.O.T.N. and doesn't include Carl McCoy on vocals.

True. I remember when I was in this other band I used to be in a few years ago, we got an inquiry whether we could play in Italy. We sent out our playing fee requirements as well as our backstage and technical rider, after which we didn't hear a thing for two months. Then, all of a sudden, they mailed us one week in advance of their scheduled concert, telling us to pick up the airline tickets at the Ryanair desk. When we read the itinerary, it turned out we would have to forego sleep for 48 hours in order to play there.

Further internet scouring revealed they were planning to put us on stage at a western themed bar (hmmm... Something for Carl? ;)) which had a very small stage that couldn't hold all seven of us (no, I wasn't in Iron Maiden) and nothing of the instrument backline we required in order to play was available. Needless to say, we canceled at the eleventh hour - after a week's contemplating about going anyway, because of our fans - much to the wrath of these wannabe promotors who threatened us with grievous bodily harm and 'telling the truth to our fans as to why we wouldn't be coming'. I wonder what story they made up on that last one; must've been good...

After their performance at the Spain Gothic Festival - muchas gracias Madrid! - as a three piece with a drum sampler, Ahráyeph now announce the addition of their new guitar player and drummer. Those of you who attended the Spain Gothic Festival - muchas gracias Madrid! - already saw guitar player Xavier Rossey share the stage with Raf. Raf : "I decided to wait it out for a while before announcing Xavier's addition to the band. This had nothing to do with him, but rather with the caution I developed after one too many letdown. Xavier, though, is a great person, a great guitar player and an all round great addition to the band. If you think I'm using the adjective 'great' too often, you're wrong. Xavier's acknowledgement has been long overdue."

And as of today, Nick, formerly of metal band Keltgar, is manning the skins in Ahráyeph. Despite his metal background, Nick has been well versed in the Goth world for almost two decades and is, in his own words, "as happy as a teenager seeing his first naked breast in the Victoria's Secret catalog" at the prospect of playing with Ahráyeph. Sounds rather good, we think.

It will be a while yet before you'll see Nick on stage with Ahráyeph, though, as a thorough regime of rehearsals and studiowork are on the menu for the remainder of the year. The band have an album to finish and thus still more songs to write and/or finish. Since there is a new band in the making (a bassist search is currently under way), it is expected the new album recording will be a group effort, a first in the band's history.

"I have a good feeling about this new emerging line up", says Raf. "Xavier proved his worth to in the past few months and at our gig in Madrid and Nick's enthusiasm is contagious. Plus, both are proficient musicians with a professional attitude, which is something I value highly. Getting into the studio with these guys and working on new songs with them, I imagine, will be anything but a chore. Unlike last year, I'm really looking forward to the last months of this year. Together, we'll make 2011 a true Ahráyeph year."

Group wise, Sam Devos of For Greater Good and Vomito Negro fame will also stay on board as the band's sound- and videoscape artist on an 'on demand' basis. With the new line up almost complete, the band hopes to start rehearsing halfway into next month.

For those who still (ts!) have not found us on Facebook, I'm posting the following message here :

WE NEED YOUR HELP, THE OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

Right, so we're still building up the band to full live status. However, there's no time like the present to start making sure we'l have gigs to play this year and for that, we need you to help us out.

The Belgian Pukkelpop Festival is NOT a Goth festival, even if a lot of New Wave, Goth and EBM bands populated the bills from the inception of the festival. The Sisters Of Mercy (who are, of course NOT Goth), Front 242, The Mission... They've all played there and most of 'em even more than once. However, I personally enjoyed acts there like The God Machine, Tricky, Biohazard, Morphine, Primus, Rage Against The Machine, Porno For Pyros and lots of other acts there. Metallica and Iron Maiden headlined there (on the same day as Eels played the same main stage), so it illustrates the diversity of the festival.

And they've always been democratic, too. Each year, they ask fans to name their top five list of bands and send it in on their website. And this is where you come in (duh). All we ask of you, is to register and make Ahráyeph your Number One Band in your Top Five List. It goes without saying that we'd like as many of you as possible to send in their lists, even if you aren't attending. This is all about helping to put Ahráyeph on the map a bit more, which always increases our chance to do other gigs, even abroad, so this is also in your best interest if you're a real Ahráyeph fan.

You might think it's hard to register, but they made it really easy for you, as their website is not just in Dutch, but also in English and French. For English, go here. For French, go here. Unfortunately, no German version of the site exists, but I'm sure everyone speaks well enough English to do this.

We thank you in advance for helping us out and who knows, if we'll make it to the festival and you're planning to attend, we could end up sharing a couple of beers with you.

Raf/Ahráyeph

P.S. : They have the same kind of thing going on at the M'era Luna website forum, so while you're at it, you could increase our chances at gigs even more. And on top of that, the Sziget Festival in Hungary is also doing a whislist thing. Our infinite gratitude goes out to all of you, of course...

A Call To Arms (or : support your local Belgian Goff band)

Seeing as the Shadowplay Festival - which replaces the Waregem Gothic Festival this year - has seen fit to book Fields of the Nephilim, we of Ahráyeph think it would be a damn shame if the Dawnrazors supporting us wouldn't get to see their favourite Belgian band (and yes, I am now blatantly ignoring that Star Industry is better known and probably loved more than we are, but I don't care). So once again, we're calling all stations to do something for us, seeing as the last time I saw and spoke to several of you (the FOTN Xmas Ball gig at Cologne) I got several requests to perform. If we can't come to your country, but you're coming to ours to see Carl 'n the Boyz, why not help to make sure Ahráyeph plays at Shadowplay as well? At the very least you'll have one more good reason to attend the festival.

So what do we want you to do? If you have a Facebook account, go to the Shadowplay Festival FB page, become a member and post demand to see Ahráyeph play. Demand it several times, lest they become annoyed and book us if only to end the incessant badgering. The best way to let the organisers know what and who you want to see is to bombard them with requests to book a band. Otherwise they aren't going to bother. Why book a band that doesn't pull any punters? And unlike with 2008's Waregem debacle, if they book us, we will come, even if any or all of us are half dead. Or 90% dead. Whatever. We will make sure to be there and play as if our lives depend on it (which in some cases, they do). It could be your only chance this year to see us in the environment we thrive in : on stage.

We thank you for your support.

When is a new album coming out Ahráyeph?
If you pass through my soul tonight
Gather all his troubles
Tomorrow's long with eternal night
Gather for tomorrow
When I'm gone wait here
Discover all of earth's surprises
When I'm gone wait here
I'll send my child my last good smile

Hi Wolflover,

As mentioned in my note on Facebook, I've now finished with all but a couple of details of the songwriting portion for the next release. Some lyrics still need finishing and one song needs to be completed, all of which will only take until the end of this month.

There are preproduction rehearsals scheduled after April, which will last well into the summer and would only be interrupted if and when we would be playing at Shadowplay (still time to like that page and demand Ahráyeph be put on the bill). The actual recording of the next release will then last throughout Autumn, for a tentative release date sometime in the first half of 2012.

Why take all this time when the songs are ready to record now? Because, as I've mentioned before a few times here and there, I've got something special planned and if that goes as planned, financing permitting (of course), it will definitely be different from the usual CD release and a very limited edition affair to boot. Sorry, I can't/won't tell you more right now, because it's by no means a certainty, but I'm aiming to making it happen the way i've envisioned the next release. In one way, the fact that hardly anyone is buying CD's anymore has prompted this idea. Necessity is the mother of invention...

And since i'm resigned to doing everything myself, you can understand this takes more time than if I could subcontract portions of the work to specialised companies. But as money's tight - and that's an understatement - this isn't an option, while going DIY on every aspect (so not just the recording portion) is the only way to go. And the less money there is, the longer it all takes. It's as simple as that in these times of illegal downloading, when labels aren't willing to take any chances anymore except if it's a safe bet. I can promise you one thing, though : the songs are GREAT!

I can't wait for it. :D If the excellent song 'Eden' was anything to go by I'd say the new songs/material will be fantastic.

Thanks for the vote of confidence! The thing with 'Eden' was that I had great source material to work with from another Belgian band. Nevertheless, I believe I can slam out a few decent tracks of my own as well on a good day...

Unless you know something I don't, Ian, I'd fancy my chances of playing the Shadowplay Fest when FOTN is confirmed there a bit better than getting in on the London bill, if only for the reason we have no management or record company who could get us on there.

Also if you know something I don't, you could always inform our booker about it. He's a decent bloke, who also takes care of The Eden House's live affairs from now on.
